Pavlopoulos: EU can move forward without Britain
Greek President on Wednesday expressed his regret about the outcome of the UK referendum on EU membership, while urging the bloc to return to its fundamental values.
The vote of the British public to leave the EU was a “negative development,” Pavlopoulos said. However, he said, “the European Union can, and should, continue its historic course even without the United Kingdom.”
In order to safeguard its future, the Greek President said, the EU must return to the values of its founders, in the wake of the disastrous Second World War.
“[EU] policy must be based on the principle that the economy is here to serve man, and not vice versa,” he said.
