Ex-minister faces trial over student’s death
Former minister and New Democracy MP Christos Markoyiannakis is to face trial in connection with the death of 20-year-old student Vangelis Giakoumakis in Ioannina, northwestern Greece, last year, the Supreme Court ruled on Thursday.
The ruling overturned an appeal by a prosecutor against Markoyiannakis’s indictment, which was issued in March last year by a council of appeals court judges in Ioannina.
Markoyiannakis faces charges of being a moral accomplice to a breach of duty as he is alleged to have pressed the management at the Dairy School in Ioannina to ensure that three Cretan students who allegedly bullied Giakoumakis not face punishment. Markoyiannakis is Cretan.
Giakoumakis’s body was found in March 2015 in a field near the school, 37 days after he went missing. A postmortem concluded that he committed suicide.
