Army leader honors Distomo by attending ceremony for the first time

Admiral Evangelos Apostolakis, Chief of the Hellenic National Defense General Staff, attended events in Distomo, central Greece, on Friday marking the 72nd anniversary of the massacre of 218 people in the town by the Nazis in 1944.

It was the first time the leader of the country’s armed forces had attended the commemoration of the massacre in Distomo. Representatives of all Greek political parties were present and Alternate Defense Minister Dimitris Vitsas said “the best way to honor the victims of Nazi atrocities is to preserve the memory while at the same time continuing the struggle against Nazism and the phenomena that reproduce it.”
