Tributes pour in for former chairman of British Committee for Parthenon Marbles reunification
Tributes poured in Tuesday for former British MP Eddie O’Hara, who was chairman of the British Committee for the Reunification of the Parthenon Marbles (BCRPM) from 2010 until his death on Saturday, May 28.
“We will remember him for many aspects of his commitment to the cause but perhaps more importantly for his love and understanding of people,” said the BCRPM in a statement.
“His passion for the Parthenon Marbles never waned and his dedication to the campaign was steadfast.”
O’Hara, who was an MP for Knowsley South in Merseyside for 20 years, argued that the “only one place on earth where you can have a simultaneous visual and aesthetic experience of the Parthenon and the sculptures” is in the Acropolis Museum in Athens.
The Greek Culture Ministry called him a “popular and pioneering” professor of ancient Greek and Latin. “He undoubtedly had a decisive impact on public opinion, creating many friends and supporters through his actions in favor of the repatriation of the Parthenon Marbles and their reunification with the monument from which they were taken by force,” said the ministry.
