Education minister reacts to warnings of strike action during nation-wide exams
Education Minister Nikos Filis on Wednesday reacted to teachers' warnings over strike action during the upcoming nation-wide university entry exams.
Teachers are protesting against budget restrictions and staff shortages in the education sector. A final decision on strike action by the regional secondary school teacher unions (ELME) is expected on May 21.
Speaking on Antenna TV on Wednesday morning, Filis said that the leftist-led government had taken steps to prevent shortages as of the new academic year starting in September.
“Shortages have been addressed to the extent permitted by budget constraints,” Filis told the station. “As a result, it would be unreasonable [to hold a strike],” he said.
