Far-left party cadre files suit against police, ministry, citing excessive force

A member of the radical-left Popular Unity party, which split from governing SYRIZA last summer, has filed suit against the Greek Police and Ministry of Citizens’ Protection, claiming police violence.

Sofi Papadoyianni told an Athens prosecutor on Tuesday that she was hit on the head by a tear gas canister during an anti-austerity protest outside Parliament on Sunday.

Riot police have been accused of using excessive force in response to firebombs launched by a small group of self-styled anarchists during the otherwise peaceful rally.
