Greenpeace submits Lesvos cleanup proposal
Greenpeace has submitted a detailed and “affordable”proposal to authorities on Lesvos to resolve the ever-increasing problem of waste on the island and help it “turn a crisis into an opportunity to be innovative and to create jobs while resolving its waste problem.”
The move comes as Lesvos is projected to have 17 tons of extra daily waste to deal with until 2017.
Lesvos has borne the brunt of the refugee crisis with thousands of refugees reaching its shores since last summer sparking a waste management crisis on the island.
The cost of implementing the proposal is estimated at 4.7 million euros (without VAT) and Greenpeace said it could be financed either by grants, state funding, EU refugee funds, or all them together.
“We conducted research that proves that it would be easy, with the existing technologies, to manage the excess waste in an economical and quick way,” said Nikos Haralambidis, the general director of Greenpeace in Greece.
