Transport authorities seek to beef up security at metro stations
Authorities are seeking to enlist military-trained personnel to guard metro, rail and tram stations in response to a recent spike in acts of vandalism.
The Urban Rail Transport Company (STASY), a subsidiary of the Athens Urban Transport Organization (OASA), wishes to recruit male company workers with a motorcycle driving license and who have served in special army units.
Successful applicants will either join or replace police units that have been posted at stations since last month, following a recent upsurge in raids around Athens by hooded youths who used sledgehammers to smash windows as well as ticket dispensers and validation machines.
