Numbers at Piraeus migrant camp fall due to transfers to new site
Around 1,000 refugees and migrants have been moved from Piraeus to a newly constructed camp in Skaramagas, west of Athens, over the past few days.
According to government data on Wednesday, there were 3,805 people still camped out at the Piraeus passenger terminal. Until recently, there had been more than 5,000 people at the unofficial migrant camp.
The camp at Skaramagas is still under construction and another 1,000 places are expected to be made available in the next few days.
Officials said the government has given priority to Yezidis but will also begin moving Syrians and then Afghans away from Piraeus, where conditions have deteriorated.
