Cabbies to strike on Thursday over planned tax increases

There will be no taxis on the roads in Greece on Thursday as cabbies have decided to go on strike over planned increases.
The strike will start at 5 a.m. on Thursday and end 24 hours later. The national association of taxi drivers’ unions (POEIATA) said that its members, some 30,000 cabbies, are being asked to carry a disproportionate burden.
The union called for VAT on cab rides to be slashed from 23 to 13 percent and for their income tax to be reduced.
Meanwhile, there will be no trolley buses in Athens between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. on Wednesday due to a work stoppage.
