Greek prosecutors call for respect of judiciary’s independence
The Union of Greek Prosecutors’ on Friday waded into the political row over the government’s alleged intervention in the judicial system by issuing a statement calling on the state to respect the judiciary’s independence.
“The independence of the judiciary is enshrined in the Constitution and precludes any form of intervention in prosecutors’ duties by the political system, including the government, Parliament and the parties,” the union said.
It also called on the government to show its respect for the judiciary by improving conditions for prosecutors.
The union’s statement comes amid a row between the government and the opposition over whether Justice Minister Nikos Paraskevopoulos intervened in a case being investigated by a prosecutor.
