New Democracy to ask for Parliament to investigate capital controls, signing of third bailout
New Democracy is expected to table a request in Parliament on Wednesday for a House committee to investigate last year’s handling of the Greek economy and the imposition of capital controls.
The move comes after Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras called on Tuesday during a parliamentary debate for a committee to investigate how bank loans were granted to heavily indebted political parties and media groups.
New Democracy leader Kyriakos Mitsotakis said he would agree to the formation of such a panel if Tsipras also backed the idea of a committee investigating last year’s events, including the bank holiday, adoption of capital controls, recapitalization of Greek lenders and signing of the third Memorandum of Understanding with the country’s lenders.
