Man arrested for blackmailing senior cleric

A man posing as a tax official was arrested on Wednesday for demanding 8,200 euros from the Bishop Amvrosios of Kalavryta to settle a supposed debt his church owed in taxes, threatening that otherwise one of its properties would be auctioned off.

The 28-year-old was nabbed at a local post office, where he had gone to pick up a check promised to him by Amvrosios, who had earlier notified police.
