EU migration chief to inspect Idomeni camp, talk to officials
The European Union’s commissioner for migration policy, Dimitris Avramopoulos, is due on Tuesday to visit a makeshift camp on Greece’s northern border with the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (FYROM), along with European Commission spokesman Margaritis Schinas.
The two Greek officials are expected to inspect conditions at the camp following concerns voiced by relief agencies of a health epidemic breaking out due to poor sanitation.
They will also be speaking with local authorities in the area following the exodus on Monday of several hundred people from the camp, who defied a Greek police cordon and made their way across an unguarded stretch of the FYROM border.
