German historian Heinz Richter cleared of charges
German historian Heinz Richter, on trial over a controversial book recounting the 1941 Battle of Crete, has been cleared of all charges.
The author of “Operation Mercury: The Invasion of Crete,” had been charged by a Rethymno prosecutor with “denial of a defamatory nature of the Nazi crimes committed against the Cretan people.”
The ruling by the Rethymno court was announced Wednesday.
The former professor of Greek and Cypriot modern history at the University of Mannheim was the first person to have been charged under Greece’s new anti-racism act.
