Two policemen arrested over vehicle fraud

Two police officers and two civilians have been arrested for allegedly trying to reclaim a car that had been seized for drunk driving by presenting a false declaration of ownership that had been certified by one of the officers, police said on Tuesday.

According to the police’s internal affairs division, officers at an impound lot in Peristeri, western Athens, became suspicious when two fellow policemen, a 31-year-old woman and a 40-year-old man tried to reclaim a car seized after the 40-year-old was caught driving under the influence of alcohol and presented a stamped declaration claiming the woman as the owner.

After consulting their records, the impound officers contacted another woman who appeared as the real owner of the vehicle. She told them that she had filed a complaint in 2007, claiming that the car had been purchased with a bank loan that had been falsely issued in her name.

A search of the home of the officer who certified the false ownership declaration uncovered several blank declaration forms bearing the police’s official stamp.

The two officers involved in the case have been suspended from duty, while an investigation is also under way into the claims of the second woman regarding the bank loan.
