Pensioners protest reform bill in central Athens
Dozens of pensioners were gathered in central Athens on Tuesday morning to protest a draft bill overhauling the social security system.
The protesters gathered on Stadiou Street and were expected to march to the Labor Ministry near Syntagma Square, demanding that no more cuts be imposed on their pensions and benefits.
“We have taken to the streets again because we are truly suffering,” the head of the association of pensioners at the IKA Social Security Foundation, Dimos Koumbouris, told Athens-Macedonian News Agency.
“Our benefits have literally been torn up and all the rights we had acquired trampled.”
The rally prompted the closure of a number of streets in the center of the capital, causing traffic jams.
