Ex-soccer chief Psomiadis dies just months after release from jail

Makis Psomiadis, the controversial businessmen and former chairman of AEK Athens has died after suffering a heart attack, according to reports on Wednesday.

Psomiadis was released from jail on parole last August after serving four years and two months of a sentence for embezzling 21.5 million euros from AEK when he was in charge of the soccer club between 2001 and 2003.

Psomiadis, 60, was also handed a 4.5-year sentence for his part in match fixing while he was chairman of Kavala.

The cigar-smoking businessman spent several months on the run from Greek authorities but was arrested in the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (FYROM) in 2011.
