Syrian child dies in Lesvos hospital from meningitis
A 4-year-old Syrian girl died in the early hours of Thursday at a hospital on the island of Lesvos after developing a fever and a rash all over her body, which doctors believe were symptoms of bacterial meningitis.
The child, a refugee, arrived on Lesvos by boat from Turkey on Wednesday morning with her two siblings and their parents.
The family was transferred to the Kara Tepe migrant center, where the young girl started showing the first serious symptoms.
The medic at the camp ordered her to be transferred to a hospital in the island’s capital, Mytilene, where doctors were unable to save her.
Her family has been put on a course of powerful antibiotics, while the camp has been disinfected to prevent the possibility of contagion.
