Nigrita Prison inmate death trial to start Wednesday
A Thessaloniki court is to start hearing the trial of 13 correctional officers on Wednesday in connection with the death of Albanian inmate Ilie Kareli in Nigrita Prison in March last year.
The 13 suspects are alleged to have beaten and tortured Kareli to death.
The former warden of the prison has also been indicted on charges of harboring criminals.
Kareli was transferred to Nigrita in March 2014 after killing a guard at Malandrino Prison in central Greece.
Closed-circuit television footage subsequently showed him being escorted by guards into a waiting room and then, bruised and half-undressed, to his cell, where he died.
