Beos suspended as Volos mayor, pending match-fixing trial
Controversial businessman Achilleas Beos was officially suspended as mayor of Volos in central Greece on Monday.
Beos was informed he could no longer carry out his duties as he is due to stand trial for allegedly being part of a ring that fixed soccer matches when he was the chairman of local team Olympiakos Volos.
The trial of Beos and his fellow suspects has been scheduled for April 15, 2016.
The businessman is expected to appeal the decision to suspend him from his role at the local authority.
In the meantime, Volos municipal council will have to elect one of its deputy mayors to stand in for Beos.
