Lefkada shifts 36 centimeters south following tremor
The Ionian island of Lefkada has shifted 36 centimeters south following a 6.1 Richter earthquake on Tuesday, according to data compiled by the Geodynamic Insitute's GPS station located on the island's Ponti area.
“It’s a considerable shift which came as a surprise even to our own staff,” said Thanassis Ganas, research director at the National Observatory of Athens, speaking to the Athens Macedonian News Agency on Friday.
Meanwhile, seismologist Gerassimos Chouliaras on the same day noted that the shift was reasonable, citing a similar phenomenon on Cephalonia following a strong tremor in January 2014.
