Thessaloniki metro extension moving ahead faster than main network
The extension to the unfinished Thessaloniki metro appears to be progressing at a faster pace than the main network.
Officials at construction company Aktor told journalists in the northern port city on Tuesday that the Kalamaria extension, which will cover almost 5 kilometers and encompass five stations, is on course to be completed by the end of 2018.
The main project, though, remains mired in legal and financial complications that the Infrastructure Ministry has not been able to resolve.
Should construction work resume soon, it is possible that the central part of the metro network will be completed by 2020. The ministry is likely to try to ensure that this work can be coordinated with that on the extension.
