European Commissioner Avramopoulos visits Lesvos after drownings
European Immigration and Home Affairs Commissioner Dimitris Avramopoulos was due to visit Lesvos on Friday along with European Parliament President Martin Schulz and Luxembourg Foreign Minister Jean Asselborn.
The visit came a day after Greek Coast Guard officers recovered the bodies of seven migrants, including four children, off the northern coast of the island. The migrants had traveled along with dozens of others on a wooden boat from Turkey.
Their deaths came just a day after another three bodies, that of a woman and two children, were found near the island.
Avramopoulos and the delegation were to inspect reception facilities on the island before returning to Athens where they were to give a press conference in the afternoon.
