Athens makes city buses available to take migrants to ex-Olympic sites

The government has decided to make regular city buses available to transfer migrants from Victoria Square and Pedion tou Areos park near central Athens to former Olympic Games sites, where they are being provided with food and accommodation.

Authorities transported hundreds of migrants from Victoria Square to the Galatsi indoor arena north of the center and the Elliniko complex in southeastern Athens over the last few days.

However, when new migrants arrived from the Aegean islands and were moved on, many could not find their way to the former Olympic sites and ended up camping out at Pedion tou Areos, where a makeshift refugee camp sprang up over the summer.

As a result, the buses were made available on Sunday and early Monday to help some 200 migrants reach the two sites.
