Coast guard seeks migrants off Lesvos after bodies found
Greek coast guard vessels were scouring the sea off Lesvos yesterday for signs of 26 migrants believed to be missing after their boat sank near the island, as well as up to 12 more who remained unaccounted for following the sinking of another vessel near the island on Saturday.
Coast guard officers rescued 22 migrants yesterday after a Frontex helicopter spotted them in the sea. Another 26 were believed to be missing, according to a Greek Shipping Ministry official. The bodies of a girl aged around 10 and a 40-year-old woman were found in the sea yesterday. A girl aged 5 was found dead in the sea off Lesvos on Saturday.
In another incident, 13 migrants died off the coast of Turkey after a boat carrying 46 people capsized on its way to Lesvos. Separately, police on Lesvos arrested a 30-year-old man accused of removing 14 motors from smuggling vessels confiscated by authorities.
