UN sets out ambitious development goals
Reducing child mortality from its current global level of 6 million per year is one of the aims set out in the United Nations Millennium Development Goals, due to be signed by UN members in New York on September 25-27.
“Development goals have already achieved a lot but the new program takes it to the next level,” Thomas Guss, a high-ranking UN official, told media on Wednesday.
The program outlines 17 goals addressing issues such as poverty, hunger, universal healthcare, labor rights, resource management and climate change.
“It is not a menu from which each country can choose what it will implement,” said Glykeria Arapi, head of the network of Greek NGOs participating in the project.
