Halkidiki anti-mining residents face magistrate

Thirteen Halkidiki residents who are part of a movement against the local gold mines were released on Wednesday after facing a magistrate in Polygyros.

They are accused of being involved in scuffles that took place outside the town hall in Ierissos in March 2012.

They all denied involvement in the incident.

Five of the suspects were ordered not to leave the country.

Another nine residents accused of taking part are due to face the judge on Thursday.

The 22 suspects in total face a range of charges, including arson, possessing explosives, attempted bodily harm and causing damage.
