Meimarakis declares intention to be next prime minister
New Democracy leader Evangelos Meimarakis said on Sunday that he has every intention of being prime minister should his party win the September 20 elections.
In a press conference lasting more than three hours, Meimarakis told journalists at the Thessaloniki International Fair that if New Democracy emerges victorious next Sunday, he would turn first to SYRIZA and Alexis Tsipras to discuss forming a coalition government.
“Of course I will be prime minister and of course I will turn to other parties if Mr Tsipras is not interested,” said Meimarakis.
Opinion polls published over the last three days indicate that SYRIZA and New Democracy are still neck-and-neck going into the last week of the campaign.
