Meimarakis returns mandate, slams Tsipras for not meeting him

New Democracy leader Evangelos Meimarakis handed back on Monday the three-day exploratory mandate he received after failing to find any grounds for the creation of a new government.

During the process of informing President Prokopis Pavlopoulos of his failure to make any progress, Meimarakis criticized Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras for not meeting with him.

“The country is being led on a destructive course but this could be avoided if Mr Tsipras wants to,” said Meimarakis. “I believe that even now we could have an agreement. Even now, the prime minister could understand that we need to meet and talk.”

The mandate will now pass to Popular Unity leader Panayiotis Lafazanis, who said that he wants to meet party leaders during the three days at his disposal.
