Greek police collar three people smugglers

Police on Saturday detained three suspected people smugglers in two separate incidents.

In the first case, a 24-year-old Egyptian national was caught driving a truck with German license plates in which 25 Syrian migrants had been hidden.

The 24-year-old was stopped on a country road in the northern prefecture of Rodopi and was to appear before a local prosecutor.

The second case involved two Greeks, both aged 52, who were arrested in the area of Polykastro, near the northern city of Kilkis, as they allegedly tried to smuggle four migrants – two Syrians and two Moroccans – out of the country.

The first of the suspected smugglers had the four migrants in his car while his alleged accomplice was driving a separate vehicle in the role of lookout.

They had been heading for Greece’s border with the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, according to police sources.
