SYRIZA’s political secretariat to meet amid internal upheaval
The political secretariat of leftist SYRIZA was to convene on Tuesday afternoon to discuss the organization of an emergency party congress next month which was decided upon by the central committee last week.
The secretariat is to meet at 4 p.m. amid growing dissent over the prospect of further austerity, as government officials are locked in talks with visiting representatives of Greece's creditors.
SYRIZA's central committee voted last week, by a significant majority, to hold a congress in September in order to discuss the party's strategy and direction. Party hardliners had wanted talks with creditors to be suspended and the congress to be held in August but the proposal by Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras for a congress next month prevailed.
