Coalition must take sole responsibility for negotiations, says Meimarakis
New Democracy leader Evangelos Meimarakis said that his party is willing to provide advice to the government for its negotiations with the institutions but that Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras must take the responsibility for the talks.
“They have to conduct the negotiations,” Meimarakis said at a meeting of his party’s political committee. “The measures that are coming will carry the signature of [Prime Minister Alexis] Tsipras and [coalition partner Panos] Kammenos.”
Meimarakis also expressed concern about the friction within SYRIZA and advised Tsipras against opting for snap elections.
The party has decided that Meimarakis should remain as caretaker leader for the months to come and will lead New Democracy for snap elections, should Tsipras call a vote later this year.
