Ministry to issue electronic tags to convicts wanting study leave
Inmates who want to study while serving their sentences will be able to do so while wearing electronic tags, according to a joint ministerial decision signed on Thursday.
Convicts will be able to apply for furlough to their prison board, which will have the right to reject applications and force prisoners to follow courses via distance learning.
Those whose requests are granted will have to wear an ankle bracelet that transmits information regarding their whereabouts.
The law permitting this was passed in December after jailed bank robber and anarchist Nikos Romanos went on a month-long hunger strike to demand that he be allowed to study marketing at Athens Technical College.
