Cretan man detained for chasing his mother with a meat cleaver

A 45-year-old man was detained on Monday after chasing his mother with a meat cleaver in the main square of the Cretan port of Iraklio, near their home.

Witnessing the spectacle, passers-by informed the police, who sent officers to the scene to disarm the man.

The 45-year-old, who has a history of mental problems and has been hospitalized in the past, was restrained before he could harm his mother, according to police.
