Thessaloniki mayor urges unity to reverse negative sentiment in Brussels

Thessaloniki Mayor Yiannis Boutaris, one of the leading proponents of the “yes” campaign for Sunday’s referendum, called on Greek politicians to join forces in order to reverse the negative sentiment toward Greece in Brussels.

After casting his ballot, Boutaris told media that the “referendum is going smoothly in Thessaloniki,” adding that “there is an atmosphere of somberness but I would also say one of liberation.”

“Whatever the result,” said Boutaris, “we need to go to Brussels all together, as one nation, and Brussels needs to understand that a sustainable solution must be reached.”

“I hope that the division inside the country will finally end,” Boutaris said. “The political parties must stop cultivating this conflict.”
