Theodorakis cancels meeting with leftist opposition leader
Stavros Theodorakis, leader of the centrist To Potami party, has cancelled a meeting with leftist SYRIZA opposition leader Alexis Tsipras scheduled for Thursday.
A source close to Theodorakis suggested that the former journalist had been irked by the decision of Tsipras to meet with Independent Greeks chief Panos Kammenos on Tuesday.
“We do not have a common plan with Tsipras and Kammenos,” the source said.
On Tuesday, SYRIZA agreed to back an Independent Greeks plan for non-performing loans as the right-wing anti-bailout party agreed to support the leftists in their opposition to any candidate the government puts forward to succeed President Karolos Papoulias in February.
Failure to elect a new President will trigger early elections in the debt-hit country.
