NATIONAL CONSCIOUSNESS-TRAINING: The investigating magistrate has been handed a file containing an administrative report on considerable abuses at [the camp for political prisoners on the island of] Makronisos, involving soldiers and NCOs. The possible involvement of junior officers is also being investigated. KAZAN: The Greek-American film director Elias Kazan (Kazantzoglou is his full name) is on a brief visit to Greece. He is thinking of visiting the Greek countryside and will leave in four days’ time for the US via Italy. Among the reasons for Mr. Kazan’s visit to Greece is his plan to make a film on the situation here. SIKELIANOS-SEFERIS: The latest issue of the magazine Anglo-Hellenic Review contains a formerly unpublished study by (Angelos) Sikelianos on Aeschylus and a speech by George Seferis on Sikelianos made on the occasion of the latter’s death and broadcast on London radio. GOLDEN EGGS: The price of eggs has risen to 2,000 drachmas each and are only being sold to a chosen few. At present, hens are laying very few eggs, and those at a price. The humanitarian aspect of the problem, however, should not provide a pretext for the perpetuation of a policy of half-measures. All these years, the EU has essentially avoided taking a clear position on the issue. Officially, states are against illegal migration but, in reality, they tolerate all immigrants who manage to settle in their territory.
