Brussels to take Greece to court over failure to close down Kiato landfill
The European Commission said Thursday that it is taking Greece to court over its failure to close down a landfill at Kiato, west of Attica.
“The European Commission is concerned that Greece is failing to protect its citizens and the environment from the effects of badly treated waste in the Peloponnese region,” the statement from Brussels said.
“Despite earlier warnings, the Kiato landfill is operating in breach of EU waste and landfill legislation and thus represents a serious risk for human health and the environment.”
The Kiato landfill has been operating illegally since 2002.
