Protesters stopped from approaching student parade

Police prevented on Sunday a rally by the Spitha (i.e. Spark) movement created by composer Mikis Theodorakis from approaching the location of the student parade for the anniversary of Greek Revolution Day (March 25) in central Athens, arresting one person.

Protesters at the lower end of Syntagma Square carried a banner that read “Untied Hellenism: Brothers Greece and Cyprus together”.

They were protesting against the strict police control of the square and the cordoning-off of the parade at the higher end of Syntagma.

The parade took place without any problems in the presence of Education Minister Constantinos Arvanitopoulos, one day ahead of the military parade in front of the Parliament.

Syntagma metro station will remain closed both on Sunday and on Monday.
