Opposition leader’s father dies at age 78
The father of Alexis Tsipras, the leader of Greece’s main opposition party SYRIZA, was laid to rest on Tuesday afternoon after succumbing to a heart attack in the early hours of the day.
Pavlos Tsipras was 78 years old and had served time in jail during the Greek military dictatorship in 1968 for his role in the anti-junta movement.
He died in his home in the early hours of Tuesday due to heart failure, with his funeral taking place later in the day in Dionysos, north of Athens.
The family asked for mourners to donate to the Doctors of the World nongovernmental organization instead of presenting commemorative wreaths.
