Man threatening to blow himself up near PM’s office was bluffing [Update 3]
A 58-year-old man who told police that he had a large amount of explosives on his person and threatened to blow himself up just a few meters from the Greek prime minister’s office and the Presidential Palace was bluffing, police reported later on Tuesday.
The unnamed man stood on the corner of Irodotou Attikou and Vassileos Constantinou streets across from the Panathenaic Stadium on Tuesday around 2 p.m. saying that he would detonate an explosive device he had wrapped around his body.
Police cordoned off the area and sent a special negotiator to talk to the man, who did not make his motives clear.
Shortly afterwards the man surrendered and was taken into custody, where it was found that he had taped a mobile phone and battery as well as a television remote control to his body, but had no explosives.
