PM ‘has doubts’ about EU summit
Prime Minister George Papandreou on Friday stressed that there were ?serious doubts? that any decision would emerge from a European Union summit in Brussels on Sunday.
In a message posted on Twitter, the microblogging service, the premier highlighted that Greece?s key aims remained safeguarding the country?s position in the eurozone, lightening the debt burden and securing reforms that will guarantee the security of banks and insurance funds.
A list of the country?s five priorities from the summit was topped by Greece?s eurozone membership. ?It is our strategic priority to remain in the eurozone,? Papandreou said. The second goal, the premier said, is the implementation of decisions made on July 21, when EU leaders hammered out a second bailout package for Greece within the context of a broader EU rescue pact.
In a related development, the head of the group representing eurozone finance ministers, Jean-Claude Juncker, expressed grave concerns over the ongoing procrastination of EU leaders in reaching a solution to a widening debt crisis in the bloc.
