Unions protest rally death, plan more action
A large crowd of demonstrators gathered outside Parliament on Friday to protest the death on Thursday afternoon of a 53-year-old construction sector unionist who suffered a heart attack following an anti-austerity rally that was marred by violence.
In a statement, the civil servants? union, ADEDY, expressed its deep sorrow for the 53-year-old?s death which it attributed to ?autarchism and the use of dozens of tons of chemicals by the police.? The statement accused the police ?in cooperation with the usual suspects? of seeking to break up a large and peaceful demonstration against the government?s austerity measures.
Ilias Iliopoulos, secretary-general of ADEDY, said new strikes were being planned for next week, the Associated Press reported. «This government has ignored the popular uprising by approving this terrible law,» Iliopoulos was quoted as saying. «Our answer is: get out as fast as you can, there is no place for you in Greece any longer.”
