Claims into stray killings probed

Police are investigating claims that stray cats and dogs are being killed and sold for their meat in downtown Athens, Skai reported on Wednesday.

The claims were made by the Greek Animal Welfare Society, which says that is has received dozens of calls from citizens saying that they have seen dead cats and dogs hanging on hooks in parts of the city center and being sold as food.

The animal rights group also appealed to citizens who witness such practices to call the police emergency number (100), as killing and selling small animals is a crime punishable by law.
