Five caught for heist at airport

Police have detained five people in connection to the robbery on October 2 of 1.43 million euros from an Alpha Bank branch at Athens International Airport. Officers have also recovered just over 1 million euros of the stolen money.

Police arrested a Greek couple and an Albanian man on Friday. Sources said they found almost 740,000 euros, 9,000 pounds and 31,000 US dollars at the Albanian man?s apartment in Exarchia, central Athens.

Sources said that one of the two men arrested on Saturday, a 25-year-old Greek, was a clerk at the airport?s Alpha Bank branch as well as the son of one of the bank?s security guards.

He is believed to have given inside information to the gang about the branch and the details they required to get the money from the bank?s safe. He also allegedly pretended to be a hostage when one of the robbers entered the bank branch.
