Lawyers threaten five-day walkout

Lawyers have threatened to go on strike for five days from Thursday if the government gives in to pressure from its lenders to reform the judicial system.

The European Commission, the European Central Bank and the International Monetary Fund have asked the government to remove some civil matters, such as consensual divorces, from the courts and allow notaries to judge them to reduce the backlog of cases.

But many lawyers are opposed. In a majority decision, their federation voted on Saturday to go on strike if the government does not back down.
