Young volunteer found dead on Crete
A 19-year-old volunteer was found dead in the Samaria Gorge on the island of Crete on Thursday. The young man had been reported missing on Wednesday. According to forester Yiannis Fotakis, he was found wedged in a rock crevice.
The victim, who was taking part in a volunteer program in the gorge, a popular tourist attraction, failed to show up to a scheduled meeting with the rest of his team on Wednesday. His absence led to an organized search patrol, which besides Samaria Gorge staffers, also included four members of the specially trained EMAK rescue team, an EMAK sniffer dog, local police, Red Cross volunteers and members of the local hiking association.
