Nine arrests at Wednesday protest rally in Athens

Nine people were arrested following clashes with police in Athens at Wednesday?s protest against the government?s austerity measures.

Much of Greece came to a standstill on Wednesday as private and public sector unions held protests in Athens and Thessaloniki. It is estimated that some 30,000 people took part in the rally in Athens, which was mostly peaceful.

However, 10 protestors needed hospital treatment and 15 policemen were injured in Athens when rioters threw Molotov Cocktails at police who responded by firing tear gas.

Police said that they seized a bow and three arrows from one of the people they arrested. Another was found in possession of an ax.

One person was arrested in Thessaloniki, where there were some minor skirmishes between police and protestors.
