Nurse convicted over death of man with disabilities in home

A nurse has been sentenced to 10 years’ imprisonment over the fatal beating of a 21-year-old patient who lived in a facility for young people with disabilities in eastern Thessaloniki.

The young man died in hospital November 2021 after being beaten in the home.

By a majority decision, a court in the town of Katerini found the 57-year-old defendant guilty of inflicting a fatal injury on a weaker person and recognized no mitigating circumstances.

However, the nurse will remain free pending his appeal against his conviction.

The nurse denied the charge, claiming he never hit the victim. He also blamed the death on another resident in the facility.

The victim died 24 hours after being admitted to a hospital in Thessaloniki. An autopsy attributed his death to a cerebral hemorrhage.

After a subsequent investigation by the National Transparency Authority (NDA) found a series of irregularities in the running of the facility, its entire management was asked to stand down. [ERT]
